How it works: recording a chess game with a camera, step by step

Alexey Mudry · updated October 26, 2026
You play with ordinary pieces on an ordinary board, and the Vibe Chess app records the game by itself: the clock runs on one phone, the camera watches the board from the other. Below - the whole path step by step, from opening the app to reviewing the game. You need two phones with internet, a tripod or holder and a chess set.

Ten steps: from sign-in to analysis

  1. 1

    Open the app

    In Telegram open @vibechessbot, in a browser - playvibechess.com/app. Sign in with Telegram.

    The Vibe Chess app home screen: the Games tab and the Create your own game button
  2. 2

    Create a game or a tournament

    Games → Create your own game → One-on-one game for a single game. For a tournament - Swiss, round robin or a meetup.

    The New game screen: Swiss-system tournament, round robin, free meetup, arena, bughouse
  3. 3

    Phone 1: open the timer

    One player opens the game and taps Open the timer. This phone sits next to the board - it is the chess clock.

    A one-on-one game screen: Open the timer, Record the game with camera and the result buttons
  4. 4

    Phone 2: turn on the camera

    The other player opens the same game on their phone and taps Record the game with camera.

    The same game on the opponent's phone: Record the game with camera under Open the timer
  5. 5

    Put the phone on a tripod

    Beside or above the board, so all 64 squares are in the frame and the board fills it as much as possible. Any tripod or holder will do.

    The view from a phone camera on a tripod: the whole board in frame with a grid on the squares
  6. 6

    Set up the pieces and wait for the green grid

    The app finds the board by itself. A green grid on the squares means the board is recognised and the recording is waiting for the clock. Nothing else to tap.

    The recording screen before the game: the starting position and a green grid along the board edges
  7. 7

    Start the clock - recording begins

    The first press of the clock starts recording on the camera phone. Whoever presses first plays Black; in a tournament colours come from the pairing.

    The Vibe Chess clock on a phone: two halves of the screen, 5+3 control
  8. 8

    Play - moves record themselves

    Play as usual and do not watch the camera. The game record grows under the frame, and the Board tab shows the position.

    The recording screen during the game: the board in frame and the move list e4 e5 Nc3 Nf6
  9. 9

    End of the game

    The app spots mate or stalemate by itself - recording stops and the result is saved. Otherwise - Finish game or the result on the clock.

    A Checkmate - White wins label over the board, move 33 of 33
  10. 10

    Review the game

    The game card has every move with navigation and a Game analysis button: players' accuracy, mistakes and best moves.

What you need

  • • two phones - usually the two players' phones: the clock on one, the camera on the other;
  • • internet on both - the "clock started" signal reaches the camera phone through the server;
  • • a tripod or holder - any, as long as the phone stays still;
  • • a board and pieces - ordinary ones, no electronic board needed;
  • • charge - the camera runs for the whole game, keep the phone charging for a long game.
Without a connection recording will not start: the camera phone waits for the signal from the clock. Before the game check that both phones have internet. Which phone will do - which phone works for Vibe Chess.

How to set up the phone

  • • in the frame - the whole board, all 64 squares and a little of the table around it;
  • • the board as large as possible: the bigger the squares on screen, the more accurate the recording;
  • • do not hold the phone or move it during the game; if it gets knocked by accident, recording continues;
  • • even light without harsh shadows or glare on the board.

While the board is not found, the top says "Looking for the board…". As soon as the grid turns green, the board is recognised and recording waits for the first press of the clock. More about the recording itself - recording a chess game with a phone camera.

During the game

  • • play as usual and press the clock after every move - no need to watch the camera;
  • • the Camera tab shows the camera view and the move record, the Board tab the current position;
  • • the app notices an illegal move and does not write it into the game;
  • • castling, en passant and promotion are recorded like ordinary moves.

How to finish and play the next game

  • • Mate or stalemate - recording ends by itself, the result is final, and the app opens the game page.
  • • Resignation, a draw, a flag - enter the result on the clock or with the I won, Draw, I lost buttons; the recording is saved by itself. You can also tap Finish game on the camera phone.
  • • The next game - reset the clock of this game: the camera phone goes back to recording and waits for the clock to start again. No need to move the tripod.

Game analysis and the broadcast

The recorded game is kept in its card: every move with navigation and a Game analysis button. The engine calculates each player's accuracy, marks inaccuracies, mistakes and blunders, and shows the best move in every position.

And while the game is in progress, it can be watched online at live.playvibechess.com: the board, the players and the latest moves. More - chess game analysis in the app, how to record and broadcast your own game.

At a meetup and in a tournament

At a casual meetup and in a tournament it is all the same, only there is no game to create: the pair already has it. On the meetup or round screen, under Open the timer, there is the same Record the game with camera button. In a tournament the pairing assigns colours, and after mate the result goes straight into the round table.

Frequently asked questions about camera recording

How many phones do I need to record a game?

Two: the chess clock on one, the camera on the other. Usually these are the two players' phones.

Do I need to tap Start on the camera phone?

No. Recording starts by itself when the clock is first pressed on the other phone. On the camera phone you only need to wait for the green grid.

Who plays White?

In a one-on-one game - whoever presses the clock second: the first to press plays Black. In a tournament the pairing assigns colours.

What if recording did not start?

Check the internet on both phones and that the grid on the board is green. Without a connection the clock's signal will not arrive, and recording will not start.

Where can I see the recorded game?

In the game card in the app: every move with navigation and a Game analysis button.

Do I need an electronic board?

No. An ordinary board and pieces work: the phone camera records the moves.

Three event formats in one app

The Vibe Chess app is built for an evening over the board, not for online play: it keeps the sign-up list, the pairings and the table while you deal with people and the venue. All of it free.

Swiss system

score groups, no rematches, no second bye

Round robin

everyone plays everyone, the app works out the number of rounds

Free meetup

who is free and who is already at a board is shown under Now

How the tournament runs
  1. 1Create the event and save the venue for next time
  2. 2Open sign-up, players arrive through the link
  3. 3Start the tournament and the app announces the pairings
  4. 4Keep entering results, then take the final table and the TRF file

More than a bot: the app, FIDE rules and a TRF report

  • The app. Besides the bot there is an app - inside Telegram and simply at playvibechess.com/app: what is on in your city, the player list, a live table, the current round, your profile and game history - everything that is awkward to read as chat messages.
  • Pairings by FIDE rules. Pairings are computed by bbpPairings, an open-source engine implementing the Dutch system: score groups, floats on an odd field, colour alternation, no rematches, and no player gets a bye twice.
  • A TRF report. A finished tournament exports as a single file in the FIDE data exchange format - the one arbiter software and federations accept. Your profile stores the FIDE ID, national federation code, title, sex and date of birth for it.
  • Free. All of the above, with no subscriptions, paid plans or limits on the number of tournaments and players.

At the board since childhood: hazy about his rating, precise about every rook he has blundered. Counts an evening as a good one if the opponent stayed to talk afterwards instead of rushing off to check with an engine. Message →
