A rated one-on-one game: how to challenge an opponent

Alexey Mudry · updated October 26, 2026
A tournament happens once a week, but you want to play now. Or after a tournament there is an opponent you want a rematch with. For that, the Vibe Chess app has the one-on-one game: you challenge a specific person or create an open game in your city, play in person at the board, and the game counts towards the rating like a tournament game. Below - two ways to find an opponent, how to play and enter the result, and how it differs from a meetup and a tournament.

Two ways to find an opponent

WayHowWhen it suits
Challenge a specific personin their profile - a one-on-one challenge buttonyou know whom you want to play: a friend, an opponent from the table, a rematch
An open gameyou create a game with a place and time, others respond, you chooseyou want to play but do not know whom - people in your city will turn up

A challenge is handy for a rematch and for a club ladder, where players challenge those above them: a chess ladder.

Challenging a specific opponent

Every player's profile has a button to send a one-on-one challenge. After you confirm, the invitation really reaches them - as a notification or a bot message - and the game immediately appears in both players' Games. The opponent confirms it on their side or declines. You agree on the place and time between you: the app does not fill anything in for you.

A second invitation to the same person does not create a second game - the existing one comes back. So an accidental second tap will not flood your opponent with invitations.

An open game in your city

If you do not have an opponent yet, create an open game: a place, a time and how many games you want to play. Players in your city will see it and can respond. You choose one of those who responded - each shows their rating and their head-to-head score with you. The other responses close by themselves. You can invite a friend with a link to the game.

How to play and enter the result

  • • the clock - Open the timer in the game card;
  • • recording - Record the game with camera: the game will be recorded, and a mate on the board records the result by itself;
  • • the result - I won, Draw or I lost; the opponent confirms;
  • • a flag fall on the app's clock - the result is recorded at once;
  • • rating - changes for both after a confirmed result.
A one-on-one game card: the opponents, buttons Open the timer, I won, Draw, I lost
The game card: clock and score.
A one-on-one game screen: Open the timer, Record the game with camera and the result buttons
Camera recording - under the timer.
A newcomer's profile: rating, number of games, win percentage, wins and draws, game history with rating changes
The profile: rating and game history.

How camera recording works - recording a chess game with a phone camera, how a result is recorded - how chess game results are recorded.

One-on-one, meetup or tournament

FormatHow it worksWhat it gives
One-on-one gametwo people, whenever suits them, as many games as they deciderating for every game
Casual meetuplots of people in one evening, they choose opponents themselvesrating for every game
Tournamentpairings by the system, rounds, placesrating and a place in the table

All three formats count towards the same Vibe Chess rating. More about meetups - a casual chess meetup.

Challenge an opponent right now

Open your opponent's profile in the Vibe Chess app and send a one-on-one challenge - or create an open game in your city.

Frequently asked questions about one-on-one games

How do I challenge an opponent to a game?

Open their profile in the Vibe Chess app and send a one-on-one challenge. The invitation reaches them as a notification or a bot message, and they confirm the game on their side.

How do I find an opponent if I do not know anyone?

Create an open game with a place and time - players in your city will see it and can respond. You choose one of them.

Does a one-on-one game count towards the rating?

Yes. One-on-one games with a confirmed result change the Vibe Chess rating, just like tournament games.

What is the head-to-head score?

The score of all your games against this opponent. It is shown when the opponent responds to an open game and on the game card.

Can a one-on-one game be recorded?

Yes. The game card has Record the game with camera: a phone over the board records the moves, and a mate records the result by itself.

Anyone can be the organizer

There are no club or arbiter roles in the app: the create button is available to everyone. You can announce a tournament today and run it this weekend.

Swiss

when there are more than ten players and nobody should be knocked out

Round robin

when the field is small and fairness matters most

Free meetup

when you simply want to get together and play

How the tournament runs
  1. 1Create the event, open sign-up, share the link
  2. 2Start the tournament - the app announces the pairing
  3. 3Record results as the evening goes
  4. 4Show the final standings and export the TRF report

More than a bot: the app, FIDE rules and a TRF report

  • The app. Besides the bot there is an app - inside Telegram and simply at playvibechess.com/app: what is on in your city, the player list, a live table, the current round, your profile and game history - everything that is awkward to read as chat messages.
  • Pairings by FIDE rules. Pairings are computed by bbpPairings, an open-source engine implementing the Dutch system: score groups, floats on an odd field, colour alternation, no rematches, and no player gets a bye twice.
  • A TRF report. A finished tournament exports as a single file in the FIDE data exchange format - the one arbiter software and federations accept. Your profile stores the FIDE ID, national federation code, title, sex and date of birth for it.
  • Free. All of the above, with no subscriptions, paid plans or limits on the number of tournaments and players.

Missing a feature? Message the developers

The bot is constantly improved based on real tournaments. If you need a feature that isn't there yet, message the developers right inside the bot with the /support command. Many features appeared exactly because organizers asked for them, and useful ideas get added quickly.

At the board since childhood: hazy about his rating, precise about every rook he has blundered. Counts an evening as a good one if the opponent stayed to talk afterwards instead of rushing off to check with an engine. Message →
