Kofein

- In August 1884 the Kazan Society of Chess Lovers opened in a restaurant on Voskresenskaya Street (now Kremlyovskaya 25) - the fifth chess club in the Russian Empire after Petersburg, Moscow, Kharkov and Tashkent.

Where in the centre do you meet, and do I have to bring my own set?›
Usually places on and around Baumana - from anti-cafes such as Ziferblat and Baklazhan to the coffee houses and pubs on Pushkina. We bring the sets; you just turn up. The exact address of the next evening is always in the announcement beforehand.
Where can an adult actually play chess in person in Kazan?›
Besides our evenings the city has several settled venues. Yaratam Chess meets free on Thursdays at 19:00 - at the Bashir Rameev IT Park (Spartakovskaya St. 2 bldg 1) and in summer in Chornoye Ozero park. Kazan Chess plays on Sundays at Soldatskaya St. 8. The «Beer, Pawns, Two Bishops» crowd meets on Sundays from 18:00 to midnight at the Tor-Nor bar on Meridiannaya St. 2. Adults are taken by the Intellektual school (Professora Kamaya St. 12) and the Fianchetto club (Sary Sadykovoy St. 30). The competitive line is the Nezhmetdinov school on Butlerova St. 7, where the Tatarstan federation also sits.
How well do I need to play to come?›
Understanding how the pieces move and what castling is will do. The Swiss system separates the pairings, so your opponent will be roughly your strength rather than a candidate master. The host will remind you of any forgotten rules in a couple of minutes before the first round.
How exactly do people meet here?›
The bracket does the introducing: every round seats you across from somebody new, and half the room comes alone, without company. Four to six games in an evening means four to six conversations that started by themselves, with no round of introductions.
What do you mean by networking here?›
About half the evening goes on the play and the other half on the breaks between rounds and the time after the last game. People come for the company, and the board works as a shared language for those who would not otherwise have got talking.
What does an evening cost?›

Is this not the same as a quiz?›
At a quiz you sit shoulder to shoulder with your own team and barely meet anybody. Here there is one person across from you, and ten minutes of a game tell you more about them than an hour at a shared table. Plus every round brings a new opponent.
Who comes, and are there age limits?›
The core is 25 to 40: developers, senior students, entrepreneurs, designers. There are no formal limits, but the evening is built for an adult crowd.
Do I need to bring anything?›
Nothing. The sets, clocks and tables come with us. The venue works as usual, and coffee and food are from its own menu.
