One of the oldest chess centres in Russia
In August 1884 the fifth chess club in the Russian Empire was founded in Kazan - after Petersburg, Moscow, Kharkov and Tashkent. Ever since, the city's chess life has been built around the Nezhmetdinov Olympic-reserve school (Butlerova St. 7), opened in 1975 and carrying his name since 1988. The Chess Federation of the Republic of Tatarstan works in the same building. The private sector is covered by Debut (Safiullina 5), Intellektual, Art-chess, Orden Znaniy and the Fianchetto club. The amateur format is Yaratam Chess at the Bashir Rameev IT Park and in Chornoye Ozero park.
Among the great chess names of Kazan is Rashid Nezhmetdinov (1912-1974), five-time RSFSR champion and the only person in the world to hold a master title in both chess and draughts. In the modern era Kazan has produced Alisa Galliamova, Ildar Ibragimov (the city's first grandmaster), Artyom Timofeev, Sergei Rublevsky and Vladislav Artemiev. Kazan's Ladya twice won the Russian team championship, in 2002 and 2003.

When to start a child, and what to choose
Under the rules of most Kazan schools, chess can start at four or five. Debut takes children from five in groups and from four individually, and Orden Znaniy from five. Competitive training at the Nezhmetdinov school (Butlerova St. 7) comes later, after an initial assessment of level and interest. The municipal extracurricular centre in the Aviastroitelny district and the children's club at the Moskovsky centre take children from pre-school age.
What parents should look at: the age and level of the group, the coach, the district, the timetable, whether there is tournament practice, how many children are in the group and what the atmosphere is like at the trial lesson.

You can start from scratch, and nobody will laugh
Intellektual, Art-chess (in person and online) and the Fianchetto club all work with adults, from individual lessons to groups. For an amateur format there are Yaratam Chess (free on Thursdays at 19:00, at the IT Park and in Chornoye Ozero park), Kazan Chess (Sundays) and «Beer, Pawns, Two Bishops» at the Tor-Nor bar. The city amateur format Vibe Chess is somewhere you can turn up knowing only the rules.
You do not need a rating or a rank. Nor do you have to join a group - you can work one-to-one, or simply come to club meetups and amateur tournaments. Competitive chess and the amateur format are two different worlds; in the amateur one what counts is not the result but the fact that you turned up.

How to look for a coach in Kazan
We deliberately do not compile a «top coaches in Kazan». There is no objective data for a ranking, and subjective selections are often misleading. Criteria for choosing are more use.

The Nezhmetdinov school has the state pool of coaches; Debut and Intellektual have private coaches of candidate master level and above; and the Fianchetto club has the Association of Professional Coaches.
Experience with children
A child needs not the strongest player but the one who can explain. Ask how many children of that age the coach has taught.
Sporting title
Candidate master, master, international master are a guide but not a guarantee. What matters is the title combined with teaching experience.
Experience preparing for tournaments
If the aim is to travel for norms, you need a coach who has taken pupils to tournaments and understands the regulations.

A live word from parents or adult pupils beats a rating on an aggregator site. Ask friends and the VK groups.
District and format
For a child the journey is a big factor. Sometimes a good coach «right across town» works out worse than an average one round the corner. The alternative is online lessons.

In Kazan and across the republic the official functions belong to the Chess Federation of the Republic of Tatarstan. Under its aegis run the republic's championships, the Nezhmetdinov Memorial, the Kazan Mayor's Cup and the republican stages of the Russian Cup.

The key annual events are the Nezhmetdinov Memorial (a stage of the Russian Children's Cup, in June, at the school on Butlerova 7), the Kazan Mayor's Cup (December, at the B. The history of chess in Kazan
The key dates of Kazan chess - from the chess pieces found at the Bilyar settlement to the 2025 Kazan Mayor's Cup and the successes of the city's current generation of grandmasters.
Ivory chess pieces are found in excavations at the Bilyar settlement in Tatarstan - some of the earliest evidence of chess culture in the region.
The founding meeting of the Society of Chess Lovers takes place at Kommonen's restaurant on Voskresenskaya Street (now Kremlyovskaya 25). It is the fifth chess club in Russia, after Petersburg, Moscow, Kharkov and Tashkent. Its chairman is Pyotr Pertsev. By the late 1880s the society had grown to around 300 members.
