Where exactly do you meet - the centre or Akademgorodok?›
Both. The logic is simple: evenings for the IT and student crowd tend to go nearer Akadempark and the university, and the open city ones in the centre, on Krasny Avenue and around Lenin Square. The exact address is always in the announcement.
How long does an evening last, and do I have to play the whole tournament?›
Usually two or three hours. You can come and go freely: some people play every game, others take one, go for a coffee and come back. The format is a living one, with no roll call.
Where can an adult actually play chess in person in Novosibirsk?›
There are more addresses in the city than you might think. The regional federation's evening club runs on Thursdays at the Spartak stadium (Michurina St. 10); adult amateurs are welcome at the Novosibirsk chess club on Zalesskogo 5/1 and at the House of Scientists chess club in Akademgorodok (Morskoy Ave. 23). Lessons for adults are run by the Garde network - five branches, from Oktyabrskaya and Gogolya in the centre to Ivanova and Arbuzova in Akademgorodok. I cannot play at all - is there any point in coming?›
There is, if you know how the pieces move. Pairings are made by strength, so the evening does not turn into a series of hammerings. Before the first round we go over the basics such as notation and touch-move, and after that the people at your table will help.
Who can I realistically meet in a single evening?›
Over a meetup you sit across from four to six different people, and these are not random chats about the weather: the game sets the shared subject, and the post-mortem carries on at the table. Most people arrive alone, so walking up and starting a conversation is the norm here.
How this differs from an ordinary tournament›
A tournament measures playing strength; our evening is an excuse to spend time with people. The games are real, with clocks and pairings, but the result goes nowhere: no federation rating and no norms. If the evenings leave you wanting the sport, the city has the federation, the Maestro centre and the schools for that.

It depends on the venue: an anti-cafe charges for the time, a coffee house or a bar by the menu. We publish the figure for the particular meetup in the announcement and repeat it in the bot when you sign up; there are no surprises on the night.
