In Makhachkala an evening more often rests on tea and coffee than on a bar - and that only helps the chess: a clear head, long games and conversation with no rush. The pairing is calculated by tournament software and the table is open to everyone. Even at the first tournament of your life you will not be routed: the system leads you to opponents of roughly your strength.
People come back for a second evening
We watch one number: how many guests come again. In Makhachkala the circles overlap quickly, and after two or three meetups half the room is already greeting each other by name.

Makhachkala is a city of coffee and tea; alcohol is hardly used, and our evenings reflect that. The format is specialty coffee, pots of tea, something sweet and a board. So you can come straight after work and driving home afterwards is no problem.

How strong is Dagestan at chess?›
Strong enough. The republic's first grandmaster was Makhachkala's Alexander Volzhin in 1997, and in 2006 the title went to Dzhakay Dzhakayev, now president of the Chess Federation of Dagestan. Since 1 September 2016 chess lessons have run in years 1-4 in every school in the republic. Our evenings are not part of that hierarchy: amateurs sit down at the table alongside people who remember the rules from the school curriculum.
Do you have to play well?›
It is enough that you remember the knight's move. The pairs are calculated by the Swiss system, so your opponent will be roughly your strength and the game will stay interesting to the end. If you have forgotten the rules, the host goes over them at the start of the evening; it takes five minutes.
Where can you meet people over chess in Makhachkala?›
At our evenings over the board, even if you come alone. The tournament bracket introduces you to a range of people by itself: over an evening you will play 4-6 opponents, which is a natural excuse to talk with nobody in between.
