There are more options than you might think. The B. V. Spassky Regional Chess Club at Pervogo Sputnika St. 4 (+7 951 248-99-51) offers casual games and regional tournaments. Sports school No. 9 for chess and draughts at Vasenko St. 100 (+7 351 263-63-17) holds the city's main tournament venue. PandaChess (Tsvillinga St. 25k1; Karla Marksa St. 70; Pobedy Ave. 388) works with adult groups too. A separate chess school for adults sits at Tsvillinga St. 56. You can play free of charge at the clubs in the city libraries: Endshpil, the Four Knights Club, Kaissa and Shakhmatny Rytsar. The meeting point is almost always tied to Kirovka - the pedestrian stretch of Kirova Street with its bronze «Lefty» and the camel from the coat of arms under your feet; from here it is about ten minutes to Revolution Square with the fine art museum and to the new Miass embankment that appeared in 2021 between Krasnaya and Sverdlovsky. Which part of the city should I go to?›
Almost always the centre, within walking distance of Kirovka: it is equally easy to reach from the North-West, from the tractor plant area and from Komsomolsky Avenue. We publish the exact address in the announcement a few days before the meetup.
I last played at school - will it be awkward?›
Rather the opposite. Half the room is in the same position; not everyone says so out loud. We will match your opponent by playing strength rather than by a form.

It is. If you remember how the knight moves and what castling is, you can sit down. After the first round the Swiss bracket will separate you from the strong players by itself, and at the start the host will briefly go over the trickier points like en passant.

Most people come alone, and that works best. Over an evening you will play four to six different people, and after a game the conversation starts by itself - there is plenty to discuss. The feeling of «I do not belong here» lasts about twenty minutes.
