Chess openings have characters of their own. Some aim at an immediate attack and sacrifices, others at solidity and a slow squeeze, and others still provoke an opponent and take him off familiar roads. So it is more comfortable to play an opening that matches your style: your attitude to risk, your taste for calculation or for control.

You value order and dislike chaos: you build a firm position with no weaknesses and patiently squeeze out a small edge. Solid openings suit you, the ones that are hard to refute. For example: The Caro-Kann Defence, The Slav Defence, The Queen's Gambit.
You dislike playing like everybody else and happily give up the centre in order to attack it later. Hypermodernism suits you - flexible, provocative openings that knock an opponent out of his preparation. For example: Alekhine Defence, The Réti Opening, The Modern Defence.
