The Caro-Kann is a reliable, solid answer to 1.e4. After 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 Black strikes at the centre with the c6 pawn already in support and, unlike in the French, does not shut in his light-squared bishop. The main branches are gathered here: the Classical, the Karpov and Bronstein-Larsen variations, the Advance, the Panov Attack and the Exchange. At each branching point, choose which line to play.

The Caro-Kann is an improved French: Black strikes at the centre with ...d5 in the same way, but prepares it with the modest 1...c6 rather than 1...e6. The difference is fundamental - the c8 bishop is not shut in and usually comes out to the active f5 or g4.
The main idea is to get a solid structure with no weaknesses and healthy development. The Caro-Kann is considered one of the most reliable defences for Black; Capablanca, Botvinnik, Petrosian and Karpov all chose it.
The price of reliability is a degree of passivity and conceded space. Black plays for solidity and counterplay, not for an immediate initiative.
In the Classical Variation 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Black decides how to develop the bishop: 4...Bf5 (the classical way), the flexible 4...Nd7 (the Karpov Variation), or 4...Nf6 with doubled pawns (the Bronstein-Larsen Variation).
If White wants more space he plays 3.e5 (the Advance Variation). And after the exchange 3.exd5 cxd5 both the quiet Exchange Variation (4.Bd3) and the sharp Panov Attack (4.c4), with an isolated pawn and the initiative, are available.
The Caro-Kann is chosen for its healthy structure. As in the French, Black prepares ...d5, but the pawn goes to c6 rather than e6 - and the c8 bishop gets out to f5 before it can be shut in. That is the opening's main idea.
The classical line: 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5. Black trades the central pawn, develops the bishop and gets a position with no weaknesses. Then ...e6, ...Nd7, ...Ngf6, ...Be7 - and you can calmly head for an endgame where the healthy pawns will tell.
The price of solidity is a shortage of space and slow play. The Caro-Kann rarely produces a quick attack; it produces a position that is hard to lose and a structure that pays off over a long game.
The most critical reply is 3.e5, advancing and seizing space. Black's bishop comes out to f5, and White attacks it with g4 and h4, or plays the quiet Ne2, h4 and Nf4, cramping the opponent. The position is sharp and requires knowledge.
The second strong route is the Panov Attack: 3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4. White accepts an isolated d4 pawn in return for piece play, open lines and an attack on the king. The isolated-pawn structure is one of the most instructive in chess, and here it arises almost by force.
If you want to avoid theory, take the Exchange Variation 3.exd5 cxd5 4.Bd3 with Nf3, c3 and Qc2. The play is quiet, but White has a convenient plan: gradual pressure on the kingside, where Black finds it hard to bring up forces.

After 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5 5.Ng3 Bg6 6.h4 h6 7.Nf3. Black has developed the good bishop to g6 (unlike in the French) and stands solidly, with no weaknesses.
After 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 c5. The centre is locked, but the bishop is already free on f5 - Black strikes at the chain with ...c5 and has no bad bishop.
After 3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e6. White has an isolated d-pawn; in return, space, active pieces and the initiative on the central files.

What to avoid, and what catches an unprepared opponent.
Once the bishop is on f5-g6, remember the h4-h5 push: play ...h6 in good time so the bishop has h7, or the h-pawn will trap it or drive it away with loss of tempo.
In the Panov Attack White's d-pawn is isolated but strong: do not let White play d4-d5 with tempo and open lines at your king. Blockade d5 with a piece.
The whole point of the Caro-Kann is the active light-squared bishop. Do not play ...e6 before developing it to f5 or g4, or you will turn it into exactly the bad bishop of the French.
