When to start a child, and what to choose
Under the rules of most Volgograd schools, chess can start at four or five. Etyud takes children from 4, Kaissa from 3 and Gambit from pre-school age. Sports training at school No. 20 (KIM St. 10) comes in later, after an initial assessment of level and interest. At municipal children's sports school No. 23 (Dzerzhinsky) chess sits alongside other sports.

You can start from scratch - and nobody will laugh
Gambit and Kaissa work with adults - formats from individual lessons to groups, with an online option. The City Chess Club (Chuykova 43) and the City Chess Centre (Sovetskaya 28) hold club meetups and regional tournaments. There is also the city amateur format Vibe Chess, where you can turn up knowing only the rules.
You do not need a rating or a rank. Nor do you have to join a group - you can work one-to-one, or simply come to club meetups and amateur tournaments. Competitive chess and the amateur format are two different worlds; in the amateur one what counts is not the result but the fact that you turned up.

How to look for a coach in Volgograd
We deliberately do not compile a «top coaches in Volgograd». There is no objective data for a ranking, and subjective selections are often misleading. Criteria for choosing are more use.

At sports school No. 20 there is Alexey Maslak (head coach since 2008), Evgeny Vaulin, Maria Maslova and Vladimir Baranov. At Gambit there is a pool of coaches under the Yakhtenfeld family. Experience with children
A child needs not the strongest player but the one who can explain. Ask how many children of that age the coach has taught.
Sporting title
Candidate master, master, international master are a guide but not a guarantee. What matters is the title combined with teaching experience.

If the aim is to travel for norms, you need a coach who has taken pupils to tournaments and understands the regulations.

District and format
Volgograd is a long city, and the journey from north to south is a big factor. Sometimes a good coach «across the whole city» works out worse than an average one near home. The alternative is online lessons.

The history of chess in Volgograd
The key dates of Volgograd chess - from the creation of children's sports school No. 20 in 1972 to the international successes of the city's current generation.
Alexander Ivanovich Konstantinov receives the title of USSR Master of Sport. He later moves to Volgograd and becomes the chief organiser of the city's chess school.
By a decree of the executive committee of the Volgograd city council, a children's chess sports school is founded (now sports school No. 20) - the city's first specialised children's chess sports-school centre. Its first address is Sovetskaya St. 28.
Children's sports school No. 20 moves to KIM St. 10. The new building is ceremonially opened by the reigning world champion Maia Chiburdanidze. In the same year Konstantin Maslak, a future grandmaster, is born in Volgograd.
Veniamin Shtyrenkov, a product of the Volgograd chess school, wins the RSFSR chess championship.
For more than 28 years the school is headed by Natalia Pavlovna Yakhtenfeld, who brought up several grandmasters and notable masters.
