Khabarovsk is a city of the long pedestrian Muravyov-Amursky and two green boulevards, Amursky and Ussuriysky, which are worth an evening walk in themselves. The chess scene here is alive and adult: Otkrytie, Gambit on Leningradskaya, Temp, tournaments under the city federation - but all of that is about ranks and the FIDE rating. We are about something else: about an evening where the board is an excuse to meet people rather than to complete a norm. The city itself suggests the rhythm - in summer you want to finish a game on the Amur embankment by Utyos, and in winter to move into a warm anticafe by the boulevard. And almost all our guests are graduates or students of the city's universities, so a common language is found faster than the opening is played.

No, we stay within a compact patch: Muravyov-Amursky, Amursky and Ussuriysky Boulevards and the embankment. From Lenin Square most of the venues are 10-15 minutes on foot, all within the historic centre.
Khabarovsk is small and I am bound to meet people I know - is that a plus or a minus?›
More of a plus. The city is intimate, and over an evening you will almost certainly run into someone from your university or your field. But plenty of new faces from IT and business come too, so no closed «everyone knows everyone» circle forms.
Is it realistic to play on the Amur embankment in summer?›
Yes, in the warm season we sometimes take the boards closer to the water - the Utyos area and the descent to the Amur are ideal for it. Out of season and in winter we go back to the anticafes and coffee houses of the centre.
