Chess tournaments for engineers

A closed system of 64 squares: all the data in view and nobody to get sign-off from

Design engineers, process engineers, project engineers, power engineers, chief engineers. An evening where the whole problem fits on the board and the result shows up ten minutes later, not a year later during installation.

There are two ways in. Come along on your own - to an ordinary club night, where games are already going. Book your own tournament - a private one: for your department, your company, a professional holiday, or as a match against your partner firms.

If you are a software engineer, you probably want chess for programmers instead - this page is about production and design.

No open tournament yet · private ones on request

We have not scheduled an open tournament for engineers yet, and we are not going to make up a date: the schedule lives in the app, and when one is announced it will appear there. What we can put together at any time is a private tournament for your company or department - no need to wait for the general schedule. And if you just want to play, you can already: the club runs regular chess evenings in Moscow.

Why chess in particular

Engineering work almost never hands you a closed problem: the input data changes, another discipline sends a new revision, and the only real test of a solution is on site. Chess is built the opposite way.

The whole system is in view

No hidden parameters and no out-of-sync revisions: both sides see the same field, and everything there is to know about the problem fits into 64 squares.

A mistake costs you the game

At work a miscalculation surfaces a year later during installation. Here it surfaces two moves later, which is the best way to see your own logic.

No sign-offs

The decision is yours and takes effect immediately. No approvals from other disciplines, no changes to the brief halfway through.

We are not going to promise that chess will develop your spatial thinking or come in handy for calculations - there is nothing to back that up. We promise exactly what happens: a few games, real people and an evening you will not want to leave after half an hour.

Who comes

DESIGN AND PROCESS ENGINEERS

Design offices · mechanical engineering · instrument making · manufacturing process engineers

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

Civil and structural · building services · chief project engineers · engineering consultancies

ENERGY AND INDUSTRY

Electrical · heating · chemicals, oil and gas · metallurgy

MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS

Chief engineers · shop managers · quality assurance · operations and maintenance

Nobody asks about your field at the door. At the board, your chartership and your grade will not help you anyway.

You do not have to be good at chess

Three kinds of people end up side by side at an evening: those who play every day, those who last played in the halls of residence at engineering school, and those who open a chess app over lunch. All three go home happy, and here is why.

Pairings follow the Swiss system: after the first round you are matched with people of your own level and from then on you only play them. Beginners do not get crushed, and strong players do not get bored.

The only requirement is knowing how the pieces move. If you are rusty: how the pieces move, the rules of chess, tactics for beginners.

How it works

01
Open the app

Pick your city, see what is on and sign up in two taps. No questionnaire, no rating required.

02
Come in the evening

On your own or with people from your department. Boards and clocks are ours, and you do not need to know anyone in advance.

03
Play

Several rounds of blitz on the Swiss system. The app picks your opponent by strength, not alphabetically.

04
Check the standings

Points and tie-breaks are calculated automatically, and the results are visible straight away and can be verified.

Pairings, rounds and standings are handled by the Vibe Chess app, using the bbpPairings engine under FIDE rules. How the system works - the Swiss system.

Why come

A problem solved the same evening

Not a year after commissioning but ten minutes later: you see the result and do not have to wait for it.

Your head instead of a screen

After a day of drawings and calculation models - a problem that needs nothing but a board and your hands.

Meet people from neighbouring industries

A power engineer, a mechanical engineer and a project engineer usually only end up at one table for a design review.

Bring your department together

A reason to pull the design office or the shop floor out of the work chat that does not feel like mandatory team building.

Test yourself

Your own mistake is visible at once and in full, with no incident report and no review board.

Get on the podium

A first place and a club rating that carries on between evenings.

Book a tournament for your company

No need to wait for the general schedule. We put together a private tournament for a specific department, plant or professional holiday: we arrive with boards and clocks, host the evening and handle the pairings and standings. You provide the people, the room and the date.

A tournament for your company

A private evening for a plant, design office or engineering firm: one department, a division or the whole site. From eight people to a hundred.

A match between two companies

Your team against a team from a partner firm or the plant next door. The score is the sum of the games on every board.

A professional holiday

A tournament for Machine Builders' Day, Builders' Day, Power Engineers' Day or a company anniversary - instead of yet another concert.

An event for partners

A tournament for subcontractors, suppliers and clients - as a reason to meet, not as a pretext for a presentation.

Book a tournament for engineers

We reply the same day and tell you what we need from you and what it costs for your headcount.

Shop floor vs shop floor

A separate format: two teams sit down opposite each other. Two companies, client and contractor, or two divisions of the same plant - a match with a team score and a winner.

team A — design office, shop or company no. 1
team B — partner firm, shop or company no. 2
boards — one per player, board against board
score — points add up to a team total
result — one winner and a reason for a rematch

We balance the line-ups by strength so the match is not over by move three. The classic pairing inside a plant is design engineers against process engineers: an argument that has run for years finally gets a score.

We can also help you find the other team - just tell us you are ready.

Set up a match between teams

A tournament as part of a corporate event - corporate tournaments. Tournaments between companies in one sector - industry tournaments. The same format for other professions - for programmers, for doctors, for finance professionals, for entrepreneurs, for lawyers, for data analysts, for economists, for dentists, for architects and designers, for academics and teachers, for marketers.

Frequently asked questions

I am an architect or a designer. Is this the right page?

Probably the neighbouring one: that page is about work judged on taste - studios, practices, festivals. This one is about calculation, production and sign-offs. The evenings are shared, though, so you can come to any of them.

I am not a good player. Can I still take part?

Yes, and most people are in the same boat. Knowing how the pieces move is enough. The Swiss system pairs you with players of your own level from the second round on, so lopsided games are rare.

Do I need a chess rating or a title?

No. No rating, no title and no tournament experience is required. Your club rating appears by itself after your first game.

I am a software engineer. Is this the right page?

Probably the neighbouring one: we have a separate track for software development and everything around it. This page is about engineers in production and design. That said, the evenings are shared, so you can come to any of them.

Can I come on my own?

Yes, that is how most people come. Over the evening you will play several people and talk to them just along the way.

Can we come as a team from our company?

Yes. The team plays inside the general tournament, and the results can be counted separately. If you want a private tournament just for your own people, that is a different format: message us.

How long does it take?

Usually two to two and a half hours of play. A blitz game takes about ten minutes, and there are five to seven rounds.

Our plant is a long way from the city centre. Will you come?

Yes, we bring tournaments to the client's site - you need a room and tables, the rest is ours. Distance is discussed separately when you send the request.

Can you run a tournament for Machine Builders' Day?

Yes, and it is one of the requests we get most often. You provide the people, the room and the date; we bring the boards, clocks, a host and the scoring. The format works for anything from eight people to a hundred.

When is the next tournament for engineers?

No date has been set yet. The schedule lives in the app: open it, pick your city and you will see the club's upcoming evenings, and when an industry tournament is announced it will appear there too. You can come to an ordinary club night right now.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing. We bring the boards, clocks and scoresheets. The app for pairings and standings is free, and you do not have to install it in advance.

A problem with a solution today

There is no date yet for an open tournament for engineers, and we are not inventing one. Open the app: it has the schedule of upcoming evenings, and the industry tournament will appear there too. A private one for your department or company we can put together at any time.
