Chess in Abu Dhabi

A capital of large employers - where the eight people you need already share a floor with you

Vibe Chess is an evening over a board in an ordinary room: a cafe, an office, a co-working floor. Four or five short games, a different opponent each round, and a standings table at the end. A free app handles the pairings, the colours and the tie-breaks.

Vibe Chess has not run an evening in Abu Dhabi yet. The city is in the app and the app is free - the first tournament here is whoever decides to hold one.

Free, in the browser and inside Telegram. No club, licence or arbiter status required.

Chess in Abu Dhabi

Ten days in August, and then the calendar goes quiet

Abu Dhabi runs one of the longest-standing chess events in the region. The Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival reached its thirty-first edition in 2025, organised by the Abu Dhabi Chess & Culture Club together with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council; its Masters section is a nine-round Swiss open to players rated 2100 and above, with a prize fund in the tens of thousands of dollars.

It is a serious, well-run event - and it occupies about ten days of August. For the rest of the year the question «where do I play four games this week» has no convenient answer, and the honest reason is that nobody has set the smaller thing up.

The capital is unusually well suited to it. Abu Dhabi's working life is concentrated in large organisations - government bodies, energy, funds, universities - which means the hardest part of any amateur tournament, finding eight people who are free at the same time in the same place, is already solved. They share a floor. What has been missing is the pairing, the clock and the table, and that part is a free app.

Who it is for

Five people who end up at the same table

You work in a large organisation

The hardest part of an amateur tournament is eight free people in one place at one time. In this city that is a floor, not a recruitment problem.

You are responsible for team events

This one has no budget line: no venue hire, no facilitator, no equipment beyond boards. And nobody has to pretend to enjoy it.

You play the festival every August

Then you know the other fifty weeks. An unrated evening is the practice in between, with no entry and no arbiter.

You play online after work

The skill transfers. What does not transfer is the way a person opposite you changes your calculation - and that only comes back over a board.

You study here

A campus is eight people in five minutes. The app does the pairings, so running it costs one person an evening of light attention.

Running the first one

Five steps from an idea to a finished crosstable

The hard part of a Swiss tournament was always the pairings. That part is the program's job now, which is why an evening like this no longer needs an arbiter.

  1. 1

    Pick the room

A cafe, an office floor, a co-working space, a university club room. Tables for eight to forty people and two free hours is the whole requirement.

  2. 2

    Create the tournament

Name, date, time control, number of rounds - about a minute in the app. No club affiliation, no licence, no arbiter status.

  3. 3

    Send one link

Players sign themselves up, and the entry list tells you how many boards you need before the day arrives.

  4. 4

    Play the rounds

Each round is paired for you. Results go in as games end; points and Buchholz recalculate immediately.

  5. 5

    Publish the table

The crosstable is finished the moment the last game is, and exports as a report if the event needs a formal record.

Honest answers

What usually stops people, and what actually happens

We have no venue

You have a meeting room. This format was built for ordinary rooms - there is nothing to hire and nothing to set up beyond the boards.

I am not rated

Neither are most players at these evenings. The 2100 floor belongs to the Masters; here eight people of any strength make a tournament.

Somebody has to arbitrate it

Nobody does. The program handles colours, repeat pairings, floats and tie-breaks, and the organiser only enters results.

Mixed levels will make it pointless

The opposite: the Swiss system sorts the field by score, so from round two you are playing someone on your own result.

It will take the whole evening

Four rounds of blitz is about ninety minutes from first move to final table.

There will be a cost eventually

There will not. No paid tier, no limit on players or tournaments, and no advertising.

The tools

What you get for nothing

Swiss pairings

Who meets whom is decided by bbpPairings - the engine behind rated Swiss tournaments - including the awkward cases: colours, floats and avoiding rematches. How long a Swiss should be.

Standings and tie-breaks

Scores and Buchholz are recomputed live, so nobody spends the last round arguing about who is second.

A chess clock

The clock runs in a browser on any pair of phones, offline included - so a dead connection costs you nothing.

Questions

Frequently asked

Where can I play chess in Abu Dhabi?

The Abu Dhabi Chess & Culture Club is the emirate's federation-registered club and organises the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival. Outside the festival calendar, an evening in an office or a cafe is the practical way to get games - which is what this page describes.

What is the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival?

An annual festival run by the club with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council; the 2025 edition was the thirty-first. The Masters section is a nine-round Swiss for players rated 2100 and above.

Are there Vibe Chess evenings in Abu Dhabi already?

Not yet. The first one here has not been held.

How many players do I need?

Eight for a four-round Swiss, sixteen for five rounds. There is no upper limit.

How long does an evening take?

Ninety minutes to two hours for blitz, around three hours for rapid.

Can a company run one internally?

Yes, and that is the most common shape here. No club status, licence or arbiter qualification is required.

Is the app free?

Yes - no subscriptions, no paid tiers, no player limit, no advertising.

What do I need to bring?

Boards and pieces, and phones for the clock. Nothing is installed.

Are the pairings official?

They follow the Dutch system through bbpPairings, the engine used at rated events, with Buchholz as the tie-break. The program has no FIDE approval of its own.

Is it rated?

No. Rating points come from federation events such as the festival; an office evening is for playing.
