Students are an ideal audience for a chess tournament: everyone has Telegram, everyone enjoys a bit of competitive buzz, and it can be organized by the student council or just an eager group from the dorm. No budget or top-down approval needed - boards turn up, and the bot handles pairing and the table. Let's cover three formats: inter-faculty, dorm and a whole-campus cup.

Three student-tournament formats

Inter-faculty championship - an individual Swiss tournament plus a team score between faculties by total points. The fan buzz kicks in right away.
Dorm tournament - an evening blitz in the common room. Gathered in an hour via the floor chat, done in one evening.
Campus cup - an open weekend tournament for all comers - the most massive format, drawing both beginners and rated players.

Why it's especially easy for students

Students all have Telegram, so registration runs itself: the organizer drops a link in the course or dorm chat and people sign up in one tap via /open_tournaments. No lists to keep, no contacts to collect - everyone sees their opponent and table on their phone.

That removes the main headache of student self-organization - "who's responsible for what". The bot is responsible: pairing, pairings, results, the Buchholz table. The organizer just books a room and finds boards.

How to run it in one evening

The best evening format is rapid 10+5 or blitz 5+0, 5-6 rounds. A tournament for 16-24 people takes 2-3 hours. How long does the tournament take?

An evening tournament for 16-24 people in rapid 10+5 or blitz 5+0 takes 2-3 hours. For a weekend campus cup you can add more rounds and players.

Do I need chess clocks?

Desirable for fair blitz, but free phone clocks work - one per table. You can also play without clocks, capping the game by agreement.

The app. Besides the bot there is an app - inside Telegram and simply at vibechess.ru/app: what is on in your city, the player list, a live table, the current round, your profile and game history - everything that is awkward to read as chat messages.
Pairings by FIDE rules. Pairings are computed by bbpPairings, an open-source engine implementing the Dutch system: score groups, floats on an odd field, colour alternation, no rematches and no two byes in a row.
A TRF report. A finished tournament exports as a single file in the FIDE data exchange format - the one arbiter software and federations accept. Your profile stores the FIDE ID, national federation code, title, sex and date of birth for it.
Free. All of the above, with no subscriptions, paid plans or limits on the number of tournaments and players.
