When to start a child, and what to choose

Under the rules of most schools chess can start at 4-5: Brave Pawn and Gazovik take children from pre-school age and Fenomen from 5. That is a playful introduction to the pieces and the rules. Sports training - at the Gazovik and Progress sports schools - begins later, after an initial assessment of the child's level and interest.

What parents should look at before signing up: the age and level of the group, the coach's experience with children of that age, the district and how realistic the journeys are, the schedule and whether there is tournament practice.

What chess gives a child

  • Concentration
A game is thirty to sixty minutes in a single focus. That is a skill in its own right, and it pays off at school.
  • Understanding consequences
In chess you cannot say «oops, that was an accident». Every move changes something, and a child learns to think a move ahead.
  • Losing calmly
Arguably more important than the wins. A child learns not to fall apart after a defeat and to try again.
  • A community
The child gets a circle of peers outside school and the courtyard, with its own atmosphere and rules.
  • Tournament experience
Regional and city competitions - about growing independence and responsibility for every move.

You can start from scratch, and nobody will laugh

The private schools of Orenburg - LeoChess and Brave Pawn - work with adults of any level. The chess club at Chkalova St. 20 is aimed at adult players. Beyond that there is Vibe Chess: city amateur meetups in cafes and bars with no rating requirements.

You do not need a rating or a rank. You can go to a coach individually or join a group, attend club meetups and amateur tournaments. Competitive chess and the amateur format are two different worlds; in the amateur one what is judged is not the result but the fact that you came.

A group at a school

Regular lessons, a programme, a coach - if you want it systematic.

An individual coach

One of the fastest ways to improve, with a flexible timetable. It costs more than a group.

Club meetings

Casual games, company, city tournaments rated and unrated.

Vibe Chess

City amateur tournaments in cafes and bars. No rating requirements, open to everybody.

Online lessons

If travelling is inconvenient, there is the online format at Brave Pawn and other schools.

On your own

Books, lichess or chess.com, going over your games. A useful supplement to lessons.

How to look for a coach in Orenburg

We deliberately do not compile a «top coaches» list - there is no objective source for such a ranking, and subjective selections often do harm. Better to give the criteria to choose by.

On Profi.ru and Yandex.Uslugi you can find coaches in Orenburg with a range of titles and prices. Serious coaches work at the schools listed above, and you can write to them directly through the schools' sites or telephone numbers.

Experience with children

A child needs not the strongest player but the one who can explain. Ask how many children of that age the coach has taught.

Sporting title

Candidate master, master, international master are a guide but not a guarantee. What matters is the title combined with teaching experience.

Experience preparing for tournaments

If the goal is to go for rank norms, you need a coach who has taken pupils to regional and national competitions themselves.

Reviews and recommendations

A live word from parents or adult pupils beats a rating on an aggregator site. Ask friends and the VK groups.

District and format

For a child the journey is a big factor. Sometimes a good coach «across the whole city» works worse than an average one near home. The alternative is online.

Price

Prices vary: from about 460 ₽ an hour with teachers starting out to 1,500 ₽ an hour with title-holders. The ratio of price to the task at hand matters more than the price itself.

An individual approach

At a trial lesson the coach should be asking questions about the pupil rather than switching straight into «the programme». If that is missing, be wary.

Communication with parents

With a sensible coach it is clear what you are doing, why, and how progress is going. Answers along the lines of «all fine, keep going» are a bad sign.

A trial lesson

Never buy a season ticket from a photo and a description. One or two trial lessons is the standard.

A guide to chess tuition prices

The price depends on the school, the coach's level and the format. Below are the benchmarks for the main formats of chess tuition in Orenburg.

A group at a private school

from about 3,000 ₽ / month

At Brave Pawn it is 3,000 ₽/month for two sessions a week, or 500 ₽ for a single lesson.

A state or municipal children's sports school

on the sports training programme

The Gazovik and Progress sports schools work as sports schools - a basic programme for the children selected.

An individual coach, a beginning teacher

from about 460-800 ₽ / hour

Profi.ru and Yandex.Uslugi. A good fit for a first introduction.

An individual coach, candidate master or master

up to 1,500 ₽ / hour

The middle of the range in Orenburg.

An individual coach, an international master

from 1,500 roubles / hour

Serious results from their pupils and experience of preparing players for official tournaments.

A Vibe Chess amateur tournament

usually from nothing to around 500 roubles / meetup

City chess evenings in cafes and bars. Registration in the Telegram bot.

What a «vibe tournament» means

  • Short games: 3+2 or 5+3.
  • Several rounds in an evening, with different opponents.
  • The levels vary - nobody has to be strong.
  • Between games you can talk and order a coffee or a drink.
  • You can come on your own - that is the normal way of it.
  • Registration and announcements are in the Telegram bot.

A checklist for choosing a chess school

For parents

  • The age and level of the group - will the child land somewhere interesting for them.
  • The coach - do they have experience with children of that age, and do they ask about your child.
  • The district - can you realistically make the journey regularly. If not, online is better.
  • The group's level - is the average level even, or will the child be «the weakest of all».
  • Tournament practice - whether there is a plan to enter city and regional tournaments.
  • The atmosphere - after the trial lesson the child wants to go again.
  • Price and package - what is included, what is not, and whether there is a trial lesson.
  • The timetable - does it fit around school and other activities.
  • Reviews - live ones are better, not only from an aggregator.

For adults

  • Whether there are adult groups, not only children's.
  • Whether you can come from scratch - literally knowing only the rules.
  • Whether there is a casual-play format, not only lessons.
  • An evening timetable - can you get there after work.
  • Whether the competitive pressure is heavier than you want.
  • Whether there are amateur tournaments - for your own motivation.
  • Whether the format suits you: a group, one-to-one, online or a club.

School, club, coach or tournament - the differences

A chess school
Systematic teaching
A programme, a coach, regular lessons, an assessment and a route to tournaments. Suits you if you want a plan for improving.
A chess club
Practice and company
A place to play and run into other chess players. There may be teaching, but it is not the point.
A private coach
Individual progress
One of the fastest ways to improve, with a flexible timetable. It costs more than a group. A good fit when you have a specific goal.
A tournament
A test of your skills
Regulations, ratings and norms. The result is honest rather than «how you feel about it».
Vibe Chess (a vibe tournament)
Play, company, a gentle way in
A city meetup in a cafe or a bar. No rating requirements. Suits a beginner and an adult coming back alike.
Online lessons
If travelling is awkward
A flexible format, with the choice of coach not limited by district. Cheaper, and more competition.

Children are taken from the age of 4-5: Brave Pawn takes them from 4 and Fenomen from 5, and at the state Gazovik sports school lessons also begin at pre-school age. Sports training in the full sense comes later, after an assessment of their level and a first tournament.

Individual coaches (on Profi.ru and Yandex.Uslugi) range from 460 to 800 ₽ an hour with teachers starting out, and up to 1,500 ₽ an hour with masters. It runs the regional competitions, awards ranks and liaises with the Russian Chess Federation.

What is the difference between a chess school and a chess club?

A school is a system: a programme, a coach, regular lessons, assessment and a route into tournaments. A club is a place where you can play and cross paths with other players; tuition may be part of it but is not necessarily central. In Orenburg the Gazovik sports school and Brave Pawn are first and foremost schools. The chess club at Chkalova 20 is a playing venue for adults.

Do I need a rating to play in a tournament?

It depends on the tournament. Amateur meetups need no rating and you can come from scratch. Official tournaments with Russian Chess Federation rating calculation require registration through a club or the federation. Rank norms need an entry permit and a confirmed level. Vibe Chess has no rating and no requirements at all.

Where can I play chess without the competitive pressure?

Vibe Chess is a series of city amateur chess evenings in Orenburg, in cafes and bars. The games are short (3+2 or 5+3), the levels vary and nobody is judging you after every mistake. Announcements are in the Telegram bot.

Can I come to chess on my own?

Yes. Most people come to all the formats - club meetups, city tournaments and Vibe Chess - without company. The format connects you through the games. People come to lessons at a school on their own too; that is the standard.

How do I tell whether a coach suits my child?

Three signs to go by: after a few lessons the child wants to go rather than digging their heels in; between lessons they play by themselves, online or with their parents; and the coach sets out a plan and explains what is being done and why. All three together is a good sign. Do not buy a season ticket without a trial lesson.
