The Trompowsky arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 (ECO A45). White develops the bishop to g5 immediately, attacking the knight on f6 and threatening Bxf6 to wreck Black's pawn structure.
The main practical idea is to steer the opponent out of the well-trodden theory of the Indian defences and impose your own game. Depending on Black's reply White gets various structures, often with the two bishops or pressure in the centre.
The Trompowsky is valued as a flexible, low-theory weapon against 1...Nf6: Hodgson and Carlsen both used it to reach an unusual position quickly and fight over fresh ideas.
