The Torre Attack arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 (or ...g6) 3.Bg5 (ECO D03). It is a «system»: White brings the bishop out to g5 quickly, pinning the knight on f6, and places the pieces on a familiar, reliable set of squares.
The idea is solid, low-theory play with pressure from the pin and plans of e4 or c4. The Torre is a cousin of the London System and the Trompowsky, only the bishop goes to g5 rather than f4.
The opening is named after Carlos Torre. A convenient choice for White for anyone who wants a solid, comprehensible position without memorising lines.
