The rule of the square is a simple technique for judging instantly whether the king can hold up a passed pawn. Picture a «square» stretching from the pawn to its queening square: if the enemy king is inside it (or can step into it on the move), the pawn is caught; if the king is outside, the pawn goes through.
Here White has a pawn on a2 and the king on h1; Black has a lone king on g8. White to move, and the position is won (per the tablebases): after the dash a2-a4 the black king is outside the pawn's square and cannot catch it - it queens.
