The Richter-Rauzer arises in the Classical Sicilian after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 d6 6.Bg5 (ECO B60). The bishop on g5 pins the knight on f6 and prepares castling long with an attack.
White's idea is to castle queenside quickly and advance on the kingside, exploiting the pin and the pressure down the d-file. Black defends and looks for counterplay on the queenside.
The Rauzer system is one of the most principled ways to meet the Classical Sicilian. It is a dense position with opposite-side castling that rewards understanding.
