The Alapin arises after 1.e4 c5 2.c3 (ECO B22). White prepares d2-d4 in order to build the classical e4+d4 pawn centre and avoid the enormous theory of the Open Sicilian.
It is a popular anti-Sicilian plan: instead of the sharp main lines White plays quiet positional chess with a space advantage. Black replies 2...d5 or 2...Nf6, hitting the centre.
The Alapin is valued for its reliability and its light theoretical load - a convenient weapon against the Sicilian at every level, from club player to grandmaster.
