Sicilian Defence: the Accelerated Dragon

The Accelerated Dragon is a Sicilian line with an early fianchetto: Black gets the bishop out to g7 quickly and fights for the centre along the long diagonal. On the board is the position after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6.

Unlike the classical Dragon, Black is in no hurry with ...d6, which allows faster pressure on the centre and on d4. The main plan is counterplay on the c-file and the long a1-h8 diagonal after a possible ...d5 break.

The Accelerated Dragon is valued for its activity and its relatively simple plans. To fight for an advantage White usually has to set up the Maroczy Bind with pawns on c4 and e4, restricting Black's counterplay.
