Semi-Slav Defence

The Semi-Slav arises when Black plays both ...c6 and ...e6: for example 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 (ECO D43). It is a hybrid of the Slav and the Queen's Gambit Declined, combining solidity with rich tactical possibilities.

The opening is famous for its razor-sharp systems - the Botvinnik and the Meran, where both sides sacrifice pawns for the initiative. There are quiet paths too, so the Semi-Slav suits positional and tactical players alike.

Botvinnik, Kramnik and Anand all worked on this defence in depth. It remains one of the most principled and reliable ways to play for a win with Black against 1.d4.
