The Steinitz Variation arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Qh4 (ECO C45). Black boldly brings the queen out, attacking the e4 pawn and going for immediate activity.
The move is risky: the queen enters play early and can be hit with tempo (Nc3, Nb5), but in exchange Black creates concrete threats and knocks the opponent out of familiar schemes. The play turns tactical.
