The Mieses Variation arises in the Scotch after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nxc6 bxc6 6.e5 (ECO C45). White exchanges on c6 and pushes e5, attacking the knight on f6.
Black replies ...Qe7 with pressure on the e5 pawn; abrupt piece play follows with an asymmetrical pawn structure (Black's doubled c-pawns against White's pawn on e5). The position is rich in concrete lines.
The Mieses is the main theoretical line of the modern Scotch. It was precisely this that Kasparov worked on when he brought the opening back to the top level.
Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
The pieces will be arranged into the chosen pattern.
