Scotch Game: the main position

The Scotch Game begins with a strike in the centre: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 (ECO C44). White opens the position at once, wasting no time on the slow manoeuvring of the Spanish or the Italian.

After 3...exd4 4.Nxd4 the centre opens, the pieces come quickly into play, and a clear open position appears with a small space advantage for White.

This is the starting point of every Scotch variation. The opening is valued for its directness and the absence of vast theory - Kasparov brought it back into serious practice.
