White to move, mate in one. This is the finish of Scholar's mate, the best-known opening trap and the one beginners fall into.
The position arose after 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nc6 3.Qh5 Nf6 - Black's last move loses. The white queen is on h5 and the bishop on c4 is aimed at f7, which only the king defends.
The solution is Qxf7 mate. The queen takes the f7 pawn with check; she is defended by the bishop on c4, so the king cannot capture her and has nowhere to go. The main lesson is not to leave f7 hanging, and not to believe that ...Nf6 saves you from the threat.
