The Modern Variation of the Scandinavian arises after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 (ECO B01). Instead of 2...Qxd5 Black gives up the pawn temporarily, to regain it with the knight and avoid exposing the queen to tempo-gaining moves.
After 3.d4 Black continues ...Nxd5 or prepares an undermining break; positions often arise with a slight initiative for the pawn, or with quick harmonious development. This is a more flexible treatment of the Scandinavian than the early-queen lines.
The 2...Nf6 line appeals to anyone who wants lively, unusual play with Black against 1.e4 without losing tempi with the queen.
