The Schliemann Defence (also called the Jaenisch) arises in the Ruy Lopez after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5 (ECO C63). Black lands the gambit blow ...f5 at the centre immediately, going for a sharp initiative.
It is a risky but insidious opening: Black opens lines and goes in for tactics from move three. White has to play accurately (4.Nc3 or 4.d3, for example), or the initiative changes hands.
The Schliemann is a weapon for the bold: instead of a quiet Spanish struggle, Black imposes abrupt tactical play at once - particularly dangerous when White is underprepared.
