Rook against pawn is a classic race: the side with the rook tries to hold up or win the passed pawn, while the side with the pawn tries to queen it under cover of the king. Black to move here.
On the board, White's king on g5 and pawn on f5 are trying to push through, while Black's rook on d1 and king on a3 try to stop them. Exact moves decide it: the rook checks from the side and from behind, and the king hurries across to help.
Positions like this are excellent calculation practice - a single tempo often settles them. Knowing the techniques (checking down the file, cutting the king off from the pawn) keeps you from throwing away either the win or the saving draw.
