Reti Opening

The Reti begins 1.Nf3 followed by c4 (for example 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4, ECO A09). It is a hypermodern flank opening: rather than occupying the centre with pawns, White attacks it from the wings and with a fianchettoed bishop.

The opening is notably flexible and often transposes into other systems - the English, the Catalan or the Queen's Gambit. White plays on an understanding of the structure rather than on forcing lines.

It is named after Richard Reti, one of the founders of hypermodernism. A universal player's weapon, for those who enjoy strategically rich, unconventional chess.

Set it up on the board, move the pieces around and copy the FEN - or open the full walkthrough of the opening in a separate article.

Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
