The Queen's Gambit Accepted arises after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 (ECO D20). Black takes the pawn on c4 with no intention of holding it, conceding the centre and counting on returning the pawn in time and finishing development quietly.
White regains the c4 pawn (usually with e3 and Bxc4) and gets a space advantage and an active e4/d4 centre. Black aims to equalise with the ...c5 or ...e5 breaks and quick piece development.
