Queen against a far-advanced pawn is an important technical position. Black to move. The stronger side stops the pawn with the queen and brings the king closer one step at a time.
Here White has a pawn on b7 and the king on c7, ready to queen; Black's queen on e3 has to prevent it. There is one technique: the queen checks the king onto the square in front of its own pawn, gaining the tempo needed to walk her own king nearer.
The subtlety is that with a rook's pawn (a, h) or a bishop's pawn (c, f) the defending side often saves the game with stalemate ideas. So it matters to know which pawns win and which end in a draw.
