Queen against knight

Queen against knight is won for the side with the queen (the tablebases confirm it). White to move. The knight is a short-range piece and finds it hard to stay next to its king while also avoiding forks and attacks from the queen.

Here White has the king on h1 and the queen on d3 against the king on e5 and the knight on d5. The plan is to drive the black king to the edge while attacking the knight, which sooner or later gets separated from its king and is lost, or falls to a fork.

The main thing is not to let the knight «attach» itself to the king, and not to walk into perpetual check yourself. A useful technical ending for grasping the queen's strength against a minor piece.

Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
