The Polish Opening (the Sokolsky) begins 1.b4 (ECO A00). White takes space on the queenside at once and prepares to fianchetto the bishop on b2, aimed at the long diagonal.
The idea is to take the game out of well-trodden theory and impose an unusual position from move one. The pawn on b4 can cramp Black, but it can also become a target (...a5, ...c5).
It is a rare, offbeat opening named after Alexey Sokolsky. It suits anyone who enjoys original play and a psychological edge over an unprepared opponent.
