The Classical Variation arises in the Pirc after 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.Nf3 (ECO B08). White develops quietly and naturally, without the immediate pawn storm of the Austrian Attack.
It is a reliable, positional plan: White keeps the space advantage and responds flexibly to Black's counterplay with the ...e5 or ...c5 breaks. The play turns on fine manoeuvring.
The Classical Variation is the most universal and solid way to play against the Pirc: no risk, and durable positional pressure in return.
