The Austrian Attack arises in the Pirc after 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.f4 (ECO B09). White builds a powerful e4-d4-f4 pawn centre and prepares a direct kingside storm with e5 and the pawns.
It is the most aggressive way to play against the Pirc: White backs space and attack. Black has to counter-attack the centre in time with the ...c5 or ...e5 breaks, or be swept away.
The Austrian Attack leads to a sharp, forcing fight. The choice of anyone who wants to punish Black's accommodating set-up at once with a big centre and momentum.
