The Pirc arises after 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6. It is a hypermodern opening: Black is in no hurry to occupy the centre with pawns and hands it to White instead, in order to attack the pawn centre later with pieces and the fianchettoed bishop on g7.
The idea is flexibility and counter-attack. Black lets White build a big pawn centre, counting on undermining it with ...c5 or ...e5. In exchange White gets space and chances of a direct attack.
The Pirc asks Black for good positional understanding and accurate play, which is why it appeals to active, flexible players. The closely related Modern Defence rests on the same ideas.
