The Philidor Defence arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 (ECO C41). Black defends the e5 pawn with ...d6 rather than by developing a knight - the result is a solid but somewhat passive and cramped position.
The opening is named after Francois-Andre Philidor, who prized a firm pawn structure. Black's task is to finish development carefully and free the position with ...d5 or an exchange in the centre when the chance comes; the main danger is a shortage of space.
These days the Philidor is often reached by the move order 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5, sidestepping a number of sharp lines. A reliable choice for anyone who likes solid but unambitious set-ups.
