The Three Knights arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 (ECO C42). Rather than capture on e5, White develops the knight, and most often after 3...Nc6 the game transposes into the Four Knights.
The idea is to take the game out of the symmetrical exchange lines of Petrov's main defence and impose a fight in the spirit of the open games, with natural development. Black can also keep independent paths (3...Bb4).
A quiet, classical approach against Petrov's that backs clear play on developing principles rather than forcing theory.
