The Modern Attack arises in Petrov's Defence after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.d4 (ECO C43). Instead of the usual capture 3.Nxe5, White hits the centre at once, steering the game into more open and complicated channels.
After 3...Nxe4 4.Bd3 (or 3...exd4) lively piece play appears with concrete lines. White aims to use the lead in development and the space, avoiding the dry equality of Petrov's main lines.
The Modern Attack is the ambitious way to fight the solid Petrov: White complicates matters and tries to prove an edge in a more dynamic position.
