The Classical Attack arises in Petrov's Defence after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.d4 (ECO C42). This is the main line of the Russian Game: White regains the pawn and advances d4, taking slightly more space.
The position is symmetrical and solid in character, with a minimal edge for White. The fight is over piece activity and control of the central squares; Black equalises with careful play.
The Classical system is the heart of Petrov theory, an opening with the soundest of reputations. Kramnik and Carlsen both used it at the top level, valuing reliability without weaknesses.
