Pawn endgame: breaking through with a passer

This pawn ending is decided by king activity. White to move, and the position is won (per the tablebases): White's king outflanks Black's and helps the d-pawn through, while the kingside pawns are locked solid and take no part.

White has the king on c4 and pawns on d5 and h5; Black has the king on d6 and a pawn on h6 (the h5 and h6 pawns are blocked). White manoeuvres the king on the queenside, takes d6 away from the black king and pushes the pawn d5-d6-d7-d8.

The main idea is not the pawn count itself but the active king: it is the king that outflanks the defender and drags the passer through. In pawn endings king activity often matters more than an extra pawn.

How to run a tournament without being an arbiter

Round robin

for a small group that wants to play everyone

How the tournament runs
  1. 1Creating the event takes a minute
  2. 2Open registration and drop the link into the chat
  3. 3Pairings follow FIDE rules (Dutch system, the bbpPairings engine)
  4. 4Results go in with two taps and the table recalculates instantly
