Nimzo-Indian Defence: the Huebner Variation

The Huebner Variation arises in the Nimzo-Indian after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e3 c5 5.Bd3 Nc6 (ECO E41), followed by ...Bxc3 doubling White's pawns on the c-file.

Black's idea is to trade the bishop on c3, fix White's doubled pawns and block the centre, so that the knights dominate on the dark squares. It is the classic Nimzowitsch plan: structure counts for more than the bishop pair.

The variation is named after Robert Huebner, who handled it masterfully. A model of blockading strategy and play against pawn weaknesses.
