Modern Benoni

The Modern Benoni arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 (ECO A60). Black creates an asymmetrical pawn structure and gets a queenside pawn majority as well as pressure along the long diagonal after the ...g7 fianchetto.

The opening is exceptionally dynamic: White advances in the centre and on the kingside with e4-e5, while Black counter-attacks down the e-file and with ...b5-b4 on the queenside. Sharp play with chances for both sides.

Tal and Fischer both loved the Modern Benoni for its combative, uncompromising character. It is the choice of anyone who wants a complicated, unbalanced fight with Black.

Set it up on the board, move the pieces around and copy the FEN - or open the full walkthrough of the opening in a separate article.

Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
