King and queen against a lone king is the very first mate to master. White to move, and the position is won (the tablebases confirm it). The queen drives the lone king to the edge, and mate is delivered with the help of the king.
On the board White has the king on e4 and the queen on f6 against the king on c5. The technique is to walk the queen a knight's move away from the enemy king, narrowing his box step by step, then bring your own king up and mate on the edge.
The main danger is stalemate: the lone king has no legal move but is not in check. So until the enemy king is pressed against the edge, do not take away all his squares at once.
