White to move, mate in one. This is the classic mate with rook and king - the rook-against-king ending every chess player should be able to deliver.
The black king on h8 is pressed against the edge. The white king on g6 takes g7 and h7 away from him, and the rook stands on a1.
The solution is Ra8 mate. The rook goes to a8 and mates along the edge of the board: g7 and h7 are held by the king on g6, and the rook itself seals the eighth rank. The enemy king is trapped.
