Knight against pawn

Knight against pawn is a question of a single tempo: can the knight catch the passed pawn before it promotes. White to move, and White holds the draw (per the tablebases) - the knight stops the pawn.

Here White has the king on a7 and the knight on b2 against the king on b3 and a far-advanced pawn on d2, one step from promotion. The knight gets to the queening square in time, or takes the pawn, and the game is drawn.

Worth remembering: the knight copes reasonably well with a pawn, but a rook's pawn on the very edge of the board gives it particular trouble - there are not enough squares to manoeuvre. In races like these everything turns on exact calculation.
