The Fianchetto Variation arises when White answers the King's Indian with a fianchetto of their own: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.Nf3 d6 5.g3 (ECO E62). The bishop on g2 reinforces the queenside and the centre.
It is a quiet, positional system: with the bishop on g2 the standard King's Indian ...e5 break is less effective, so Black often looks for counterplay with ...c5 or the ...Nbd7-e5/c5 manoeuvre. The play turns on fine manoeuvring rather than a direct attack.
The Fianchetto Variation is considered one of the most reliable ways to meet the King's Indian: White avoids furious pawn storms and rests on a healthy structure.
