The Bishop's Gambit arises after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Bc4 (ECO C33). Instead of the usual 3.Nf3, White develops the bishop to c4 at once, aiming at f7.
The point is that White deliberately allows the check ...Qh4+ (after which the king steps to f1 and forfeits castling), but in exchange develops quickly and attacks the weak f7 square. Sharp, unconventional play.
The Bishop's Gambit is an old, romantic treatment of the King's Gambit that Philidor already analysed. A weapon for anyone who likes attacking and is not put off by a weakened king.
Drag a piece onto the board, or click a piece and then click the squares. The cross beside the pieces sweeps every piece of that colour off the board, and a single piece can be dragged off the edge.
The pieces will be arranged into the chosen pattern.
