The King's Gambit Accepted arises after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 (ECO C33). Black takes the offered pawn, and in exchange White gets a strong centre, the open f-file and a quick attack on the king.
The fight revolves around the pawn on f4: Black tries to hold on to it (with ...g5, for instance) or to give it back at the right moment and finish developing, while White tries to open the position and use the lead in development. The play is sharp from the first moves.
This is the most principled way to meet the King's Gambit - take the material and prove the attack is not enough. The opening appeals to romantics and to anyone who enjoys an open tactical fight.
